The Independence Parks and Recreation Department is a team of professionals committed to facilitating the growth and development of recreational opportunities, as well as managing the care and upkeep of park land in the Independence area. Through continued efforts, we will promote and improve our present activities and facilities to enrich the quality of life and pride in our community.

PARKS & RECREATION EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:


The Independence Parks & Recreation Department is looking for people who like to work with children and adults in recreational type settings as well as those who enjoy working outdoors beautifying the City Parks throughout Independence.

We have a variety of part-time and seasonal positions open this summer:
- City Parks Maintenance/ Mowing/ Trimming
- Parks & Facilities Landscape Maintenance
- Oakwood Cemetery Maintenance/ Mowing/ Trimming
- Baseball/ Softball Complex & Ball Fields Maintenance
- Lifeguards/ Swim Lesson Instructors/ Water Slide Attendants
- Aquatic Center Admissions Receptionists
- Baseball/ Softball Umpires
- Concessions Attendants

What's Happening at Parks & Rec...

  • BOOT CAMP: Open to all fitness levels with focus on strength & cardio on Mondays & Wednesdays, & our focus will turn to core & flexibility on Tuesdays/ M-T-W at 6-6:45pm and will run March 1st- 29th at the Falcon Civic Center Gym/ Cost: $4 drop-in rate/ Instructor: Janet Buls
  • ROC FIT Kickboxing: The 2nd Week of the 6 week session will begin on March 20th and is offered at 4:30am & 7:30pm on Mondays- Thursdays at River'sEDGE. Cost is $125 for the remaining 5 weeks, register at River'sEDGE with the Instructor, Tiffany Mangrich Thoma, or at the Falcon Civic Center.
  • AEROBICS will begin in April!! This class will meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 5:45-6:30am beginning on April 4th at the Falcon Civic Center Gym and will continue on on monthly basis. The Instructor is Janet Buls and the cost is $16 per month or $3.00 per drop-in. This is a 45 minute combination class incorporating a variety of step and non-step activities and consisting of a warm-up, flexibility component and cool down. Register at the Falcon Civic Center.
  • TKD (TaeKwonDo) meets at River'sEDGE on Mondays, Tuesday & Thursdays from 4:45-6pm on a monthly basis. Instructor: Tim Main and the cost is $30 per month for 1 child, $50 per month for 2 children, $70 per month for 3 children from the same family. Registration and payment is accepted at the front desk at River'sEDGE.
  • BOOT CAMP & HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) COMBO CLASS: This is a continuation of the March Boot Camp Class but we will bump up the intesity and encourage the people who have been coming to challenge themselves. This class will include strength and cardio work and is geared towards all levels. Class meets Mondays & Wednesdays from April 3rd- 26th at 6-6:45pm at the Falcon Civic Center Gym. The cost  is $20 for the entire class or $4 for drop in. Register at the Falcon Civic Center.
  • Work continues at the NEW Independence Aquatics Center. The New Aquatic Center is anticipated to open May 27th, 2017, in time for the 2017 Swimming Season!!! We have had some questions lately about the cost for a family membership at the NEW Aquatic Center this year and we have decided to keep the fee the same as last year for residents within the city limits- $95 per family & those outside the city limits will be charged $105 for a family membership. More information is available in the IPRD Activities Guide link on the left of this page. 
  • We are looking for responsible, hard working, dedicated lifeguards to fill positions at the NEW Aquatic Center!!! If you are not certified and would like to become a lifeguard, certification classes are being offered at UNI and the W in Waverly. Information available on our Facebook Page or search UNI Wellness and Recreation and the W at Wartburg College.
  • Pre-Season Baseball Workouts are underway!!!! The 6th Grade Boys meet Mondays from 5-6pm, 5th Grade Boys meet Monday from 6-7pm, and 7th grade boys meet 7-8pm./ Pre-Season Softball Workouts for 5th & 7th grade Girls will begin in April at River'sEDGE.
