One Book One Independence 2019

What is One Book One Independence?

Independence Public Library launched the community reading campaign, One Book One Independence (OBOI), three years ago with the book Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline.  The 2017 selection was Arrowood and 2018 was Stars over Clear Lake.  Through reading, events, discussions, and performances; OBOI builds a sense of community and encourages relationships while promoting literacy.

Why One Book One Independence (OBOI)?

What did people like about One Book One Independence?  These are a few comments from follow-up surveys:
"The togetherness it fosters throughout the community."
"Every time I stop in the library, I feel that I become more involved in Independence. I participated in the canvas worshop. Just seeing the finished products made me more aware of the Independence community."
"The connection made to the architecture of Independence homes helped  community members learn more about their hometown and gain a new level  of pride...It also stimulated a lot of interest in local history."
"I shared the title of the book with many of my friends and recommended they read it. I also informed several people about the POW Camps in Iowa, which I didbn't know about until I read the book."
