Only One More Week to Register!

The deadline is drawing near, and you have just one week to sign up for the summer reading program!

It is stress-free, fun, and you will receive incentives...and maybe even prizes!  The Summer Reading Program is for babies, children, teens and adults. Everyone can participate!!

Just register at the library or online and read for the amount of time designated for your age group.  The babies program works a little differently, focusing on pre-literacy activities. Find out more! 


Fitness Friday

Friday, June 23 @ 8:00-9:00 am

Jump start your day! The Wellness Specialists from the Buchanan County Health Center will offer a variety of exercises outside under the oaks.

This will be a full body work-out with the use of simple exercise tools that will be provided. Open to the public and free of charge! All levels of fitness are encouraged to attend. Adults only please. No registration necessary. More here.

Teens are invited to join forces with the Independence Public Library at the Farmer’s Market. Prepare delicious snacks from fresh ingredients. They will be available from 9:00-11:00 am.

Heartland Marimba

Heartland Marimba Concert

Sunday, June 25 @ 2:00 pm

Celebrate the marimba and its music at the Library!
Hear a variety of genres including classical arrangements, jazz, tango, ragtime, Americana, pops, holiday favorites, show tunes, and circus as part of the Heartland Marimba Festival’s Collective Summer Tour.

Glass Castle

Book Discussion

Monday, June 26 @ 6:30-8:00 pm

The Glass Castle will be the topic of the book discussion MONDAY evening this month.

This memoir by Jeannette Walls recounts the unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing of Walls and her siblings. It is a fascinating memoir full of love, strength, loyalty, perseverance, and, ultimately, boundless humanity.

Improv Workshop

Tuesday, June 27 @ 6:30-8:00 pm

Play improvisational acting games, create spontaneous skits, learn to think on your feet, and have some laugh out loud fun.

This program is designed for teens by teens! Experienced high school performers will facilitate this workshop that will cater to those in grades 5-12.

Wednesday, June 28 @ 9:30-10:30 am

Become the architect to a new and unique story. Words, words everywhere! Build words into actions. Audience members can volunteer as performers or sit back and enjoy a brand new story built before your eyes.

Everyone is welcome to attend library programs; no library card is necessary. Children signed up for the Summer Reading Program will receive an incentive toward prizes for attending. More info here.



Wednesday, June 28 @ 11:00 am

Tweens and teens are invited to this program where crews will be created, teamwork will be tested, skills will be shown, and excitement will ensue! Work together to race against your fellow players as you figure out the puzzles, use your creativity and show off your MadSkillz. More info here.


Basic Drawing Techniques

Thursday, June 29 @ 6:00-8:00 pm

This class is designed for those who wish to acquire or improve their basic drawing techniques. Art instructor Sara Sheets will introduce students  to basic skills including perspective and relationships between objects. Handouts will be provided as well.

All levels are welcome to attend and all materials will be provided. The class is free and open to adults. Registration is required. More information here.
