The Independence City Council met in regular session in the council chambers at 6:30 p.m., on Monday, February 22, 2010. Mayor Carl Scharff called the meeting to order with Council Members Hill, Hermsen, Schweitzer, Engen, Hand, Davis, and Holland being present. Absent, none. Complete council proceedings are on file in the office of the City Clerk for public viewing. Council Members voted Aye unless otherwise noted.
Mayor Scharff recognized Allison Martin, as Student of the Month for her academic achievement and Carol Fricke, as Volunteer of the Month for volunteering her services at the Library. Both were presented with a certificate and thanked for their time and efforts.
Public comments were heard.
Tammy Rasmussen, Chamber of Commerce Director, 112 1st St E., and Cam Granger, Independence Motor Speedway, was in attendance to request the Driver’s Day be reinstated to kick off the racing season. The Chamber of Commerce requested to close 1st Street East from 2nd Ave. NE to 3rd Ave. NE and 3rd Ave. NE from 1st St. East to 2nd St. NE, for the Independence Racecar Car Show to be held Saturday, April 10, 2010. Ayes: Six. Abstain: Davis.
Motion Council Member Hill, second Council Member Schweitzer, to set the date of a public hearing as March 8, 2010, for consideration of adopting the Fiscal Year 2010/2011 Budget for the City of Independence, Iowa.
Mayor Scharff tabled items 6, 7 and 8, setting dates of hearings on consideration of ordinances amendments, until the Ordinance Committee has had an opportunity to meet and review the changes.
Motion Council Member Engen, second Council Member Schweitzer, to approve the renewal of the Majestic Bar and Grill liquor license.
Motion Council Member Hill, second Council Member Holland, to adjourn.
Whereupon, Mayor Scharff declared the meeting adjourned at 7:02 p.m.
