Independence is a very
recreational minded community. Complete with a Civic Center,
Baseball/Softball Complex, Municipal Swimming Pool, RV
Park & Campground and 17 parks including the new River
Walk Parks, there is no shortage of recreational activities
to be involved with.
Independence
is home to some of the most unique and beautiful parks
in all of Northeast Iowa. In 2002, development began on
the new River Walk Parks. Residents and visitors alike
can take a riverside stroll along the Wapsipinicon, relax
and listen to summer tunes in the new band shell or kick
off your shoes and play some sand volleyball on the new courts.
Eleven of the seventeen parks have amenities such as a shelter,
restrooms, electricity and picnic tables and seven of these
parks are complete with well maintained and safe playground
equipment.
Independence is also home to the Falcon Civic Center. The
beautiful center is home to racquetball and basketball courts,
game room, state-of-the-art weight lifting and exercise room,
men's & women's locker and shower rooms, and a sauna
was added in 2004. The Civic Center also hosts skating parties,
craft shows and other community functions.
Youth programs are the corner stone of the Independence
Parks and Recreation Department. They offer youth basketball,
football, soccer, tennis, racquetball, volleyball, swim lessons,
walleyball, hockey, skating, baseball and softball programs.
The Parks and Recreation Department also offers an assortment
of adult programs and activities. They include volleyball,
walleyball, fitness classes, softball, football, swim lessons,
basketball, racquetball and golf.
As you can see our Parks and Recreation
Department is second to none and continues to make our community
a better place to live, work and play in. For more information
