The life-blood of every community is the children and the education system for which those children learn from. This holds true in Independence as well. Currently our district serves 1,539 students, PreK-12, with a staff of 226 dedicated instructors. The Independence Community School District was recently awarded by School Match (a full-service consulting & research firm) as an Award Winning School System. Their database confirms our school system as a fitting model of “What Parents Want”.

The Independence School District has three public elementary schools (East, West & South) that average in class size of 17, enabling our students  to receive the personal attention that you expect and that they deserve.

As well as a superior elementary education program, Independence also has a Middle School that serves students in 6th - 8th grades. With an average class size of 20, our middle school staff strives to stimulate active learning while teaching self-worth and a shared sense of responsibility.

The Independence Jefferson High School is home of the Independence Mustangs. With an average class size of 17, Jefferson High School is home to the nationally recognized Independence Jazz Band that has placed first in the state 4 out of the past 5 years. The curriculum is challenging but is utilized to prepare the students to be life-long learners and respectful citizens.

Independence is also home to St. John's Catholic School. St. John's has classes from Pre-8th grade and averages 14 students per class room. A recently completed face lift and expansion to the school has generated a lot of excitement within our community. Another interesting fact about St. John's is that students from 5th – 8th grade have an opportunity to compete in wrestling, basketball, baseball & softball competitively against other schools in Northeast Iowa.
